PPC AD SWEEP · PRACTICAL GUIDES
Amazon negative exact keywords: what to check first
Understand negative exact keywords, campaign scope, and the evidence to review before excluding a search term.
A negative exact keyword blocks the exact shopping query or its close variations within the scope where you add it. Review the query, campaign, ad group, and performance evidence before making that exclusion.
A search term is different from a target
A search term is the shopper query that generated activity. A keyword or product target is the advertising instruction that made the placement eligible. Excluding one query and pausing the entire target have different consequences. Keep the action and its scope visible while reviewing recommendations.
Exact versus phrase
Negative exact is narrower. Negative phrase can also exclude longer queries containing the phrase or close variations. Amazon supports both types and explains their limits in its negative targeting documentation. PPC Ad Sweep’s eligible keyword additions use negative exact; do not assume it generates phrase exclusions.
Review the evidence, not just a red number
- Relevance: Does this query actually describe a shopper who could buy the product?
- Reporting period: Are you comparing a useful window, with enough time for attributed orders to appear?
- Economics: Is the ACoS above your own break-even? A target can have sales and still lose contribution margin.
- Scope: Are the campaign and ad group correct? An exclusion in the wrong location can remove useful traffic.
- Existing settings: Avoid adding exclusions already present or acting on inactive entities.
A simple worked example
For illustration, a query with $24 in ad spend and $40 in attributed sales has a 60% ACoS. If the product’s break-even ACoS is 35%, the difference between spend and the $14 break-even allowance is $10 for that period. That is an estimate based on the supplied margin and attributed sales, not a promise of $10 in future savings or an instruction to negate automatically.
